We were taught that humility means holding a low opinion of yourself, and that reading has done real damage, because it turns a covenant posture into a performance of smallness. Anavah is not self-deprecation. It is what happens to your self-estimate when you stop being the thing you measure against.

Numbers 12:3 calls Moshe the most anav man on the face of the earth, and it says so about the man who stood in front of Pharaoh and stretched his hand over the sea. There is no tension there once you have the word right. Both come from the same place: emptied of self-reference, full of covenant. A man who has stopped asking how big he is has no reason to shrink and no reason to inflate.

The root carries the sense of being bowed low or afflicted, which is why the anav in Psalm 37:11 and Zephaniah 2:3 are the lowly and the oppressed rather than the modest. Humility in Hebrew is a position, not a mood.
