Seyag means a fence or hedge. It comes from the principle in Pirkei Avot 1:1, "make a fence around the Torah," the practice of building protective rulings a safe distance from the actual command so no one stumbles into breaking it by accident. The intention is reverent: guard the trust, lose nothing. But a fence has a cost over time. Tend it long enough and the people forget there was ever anything on the other side worth protecting, and the Person behind the words gets buried under the apparatus built to protect the words. The fence is not the faithfulness. It was only ever meant to point at the One it surrounds.
