What the Word Actually Means
Sung praise that became the name of a book: the noun from halal, the praise that is composed and offered, not merely shouted.
Tehillah (תְּהִלָּה) is the noun from halal, praise that has taken shape as song. Its plural, Tehillim, is the Hebrew title of the entire book we call Psalms: a hundred and fifty songs named for a single verb. Tehillim [Psalms] 22:3 says HaShem is enthroned upon the tehillot of Israel, as if praise were the very seat of His presence among His people. Where halal is the raw shout, tehillah is the shout given form, written down, and sung back.
